In our travels throughout Peru, we thought that most local Peruvians are "camera shy"... but actually more than that. Once you learn about their culture, religions and superstitions, you discover that most locals still believe that your camera , sort of " sucks out their soul " when you capture their image !!!

" Cantua buxifolia " National flower of Peru

-mainly found in Island of Tequile in Puno.

The INCA LEGEND associated with the Cantuta is a tale of 2 Kings named Lllimani and lllampu and their sons. Both Kings are constantly in battle and on their dying beds, both called their sons to avenge them, even if both sons were opposed to war. Bound to their pledge, they led a second war and inflicted fatal wounds on each other...but they forgave each other and asked their servants to place them side by side on the green grass of the battlefield.

Then Pachamama, the Goddess of Fertility appeared and told the young kings before they died that they shouldnt suffer from their fathers' unjustified enmity !

To punish the dead fathers, their stars fell from the sky and became the snow covered mountains named Llllimani and Lllampu, which are highest peaks in region. The rivers are their tears of regret and fertilised the valleys.

The Cantuta bloomed as a symbol of people's unity and bear the colors of King's sons (red & yellow) and green for hope !
