May 2nd - COLCA CANYON

...May2nd, on our way to Cruz del Condor, we passed miles and miles of shrubs & desert land - extremely dry. Along the way, we saw some very rare "VICUNIAs" grazing in the dry grasslands... they are part of the "camelid" family, found in South America. Pictures below are taken along our bus ride to Colca Canyon - the kids are so cute ! couldnt resist taking photos.

Morning bus from Arequipa to COLCA CANYON.. one of Peru's natural wonders and home to the Andean Condors...

The COLCA CANYON is reportedly the deepest in the world, thought to be twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA.

The COLCA river runs between the tiny mountain villages of CHIVAY to CABANACONDE.

What brings visitors to this Canyon are the Andean Condors ! However the Condor population of South America is unfortunately dwindling, but here in Colca Canyon we can see them at fairly close range as they glide thru the Canyon,...

The Highlight of the Canyon is a stop at CRUZ DEL CONDOR !! We had plenty of time to admire these Condors as they gracefully soar pass us...

Apart from the Andean Condors, our guide showed us the other 2 places of interests..

The "Toro Muerto" cemetery of the Wari Indians....which is their final resting place, buried in a foetal position. It is built in a 90degree steep cliff face !!

The other interest in this area is the HOT SPRINGS at La CALERA in CHIVAY ! Yes, pronounced as " chi vai " ... if you are hokkien dialect, you will know what I mean ! ha ha ha
We stayed one night in a hotel in CHIVAY....with no heater !!! FREEZING COLD ! but the hotel reception was so kind as to heat up some HOT WATER BOTTLES for us just b4 bedtime.
I dont remember taking any showers that night !

We had partytime at a "pena house" (or local bars). Dinner buffet accompanied by cultural dances and folk & Creole music !

Next day back to Arequipa by bus.
